More than 130 pediatric urologists, fellows, nurses and nurse practitioners convened for the fifth annual Pediatric Urology Workshop, hosted by Cincinnati Children’s. The three-day event in early March provided a unique format, with a focus on open dialogue about managing complex conditions of the genitourinary tract.

The workshop, held at the Westin Hotel in Cincinnati, featured presentations on a variety of topics. Standout sessions included the lecture on educational innovations in graduate medical education and the master class in urodynamics, as well as cases presented by pediatric urology fellows during the Fellows Bowl session, says Pramod Reddy, MD, Director of the Division of Pediatric Urology at Cincinnati Children’s.

“The workshop has gained traction among fellowship programs—this year, 29 fellows from almost every single training program in the United States were in attendance,” says Reddy. “Seeing practicing pediatric urologists who attended the workshop as fellows coming back year after year is a testament to the educational value and impact that the workshop has.”

Presenters included faculty from Cincinnati Children’s and 10 other institutions. With attendees from 14 countries, the workshop allows for diversity of thought and different viewpoints from a variety of healthcare systems. Participants vet and create consensus-based clinical algorithms that they can use in their own practices after returning home.

The workshop offers a few intangibles, too. Brian VanderBrink, MD, a pediatric urologist at Cincinnati Children’s, points to the workshop’s collegial atmosphere. “I am proud to showcase the event to my colleagues and see old friends while making new ones,” he says. “This workshop gives people an opportunity to interact in a social, more intimate level with academic faculty, something that does not exist at other national urology meetings. These conversations build friendships and colleagues for life.”

Next year’s Pediatric Urology Workshop will be held March 12-15, 2020, and include a day focused on basic science. For more information - http://www.pediatricurologyworkshop.org/
