Experts Gather from Far and Wide

The Division of Pediatric Urology’s third annual workshop in March 2017 attracted more than 112 clinicians for four days of professional enrichment and education. This year, for the first time, the workshop kicked off with a basic science day, hosted by Joo-Seop Park, PhD, a developmental biologist at Cincinnati Children’s. The three days that followed included clinical presentations, case studies and panel discussions on topics ranging from bowel management strategies for anorectal malformation to vaginal reconstruction to management of the pediatric patient with bladder exstrophy.

The number of attendees traveling from other countries to attend the workshop grew again this year, a trend that Eugene Minevich, MD, hopes will continue. Minevich, a pediatric urologist who provided leadership in organizing the workshop, has been deeply involved in international education for many years. Some of his activities abroad include speaking at symposiums, serving as a visiting professor, and performing surgeries and providing training for local physicians, as well as hosting visiting surgeons at Cincinnati Children’s. “Many of our workshop attendees this year were surgeons I have met through my international work in Israel and Eastern Europe,” Minevich says. “The workshop provided in-depth exposure to rare pathology and advanced surgical techniques, and was a great opportunity for them to make social connections with some of the world’s leading pediatric urologists. Technologies such as Skype and WhatsApp make it easy and affordable for them to maintain these professional relationships when they return home.”

In recognition of Minevich’s commitment to advancing urologic medicine worldwide, the Division of Pediatric Urology honored him in 2017 with the endowment chair in pediatric urology international education. The endowment will be used to support the annual workshop and various global outreach efforts.

Many thanks to our presenters, including Cincinnati Children’s faculty and physicians from Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Lurie Children’s in Chicago, MaxCure Hospitals in Hyderabad, India, and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, among other institutions.

The 2018 Urology Workshop will take place March 2-4.
